@bert_hubert @phiofx Great article. I've been thinking about this a lot after emigrating to the US, and I feel a large part of the problem is cultural. As you wrote, tech people just aren't valued/respected in Europe.

It seems to me as if Europe clings to an industrial revolution era belief that successful companies must be driven by "businessmen". As if innovation is something that happens once before (lightbulb, engine, etc) and the business/finance people make it into a profitable product.

I don't collect any #retrocomputing stuff because I have neither the space nor time for it, but this briefly made me consider it...

I probably spend way too much time on writing E-mails because I can't edit them.

I have a tendency to rewrite and restructure sentences, and I often end up leaving small errors behind.

At least on Mastodon I can fix these after the fact. But an e-mail will be wrong, forever!

Oh and if you're at all interested in the intercept of computer architecture and space exploration, I can again wholeheartedly recommend the book "The Apollo Guidance Computer: Architecture and Operation"

It's a surprisingly accessible textbook about one of most important and specialized computers ever made.

#Lemmy is kinda hard to use these days because of all the instance outages.

Still hoping one day Fedi can transform into a more distributed protocol, not with users and communities registered on fixed instances, which go down all too easily. Usenet basically did this 40 years ago, so can't we improve on it...

Not everything is completely perfect on the 2023 #Linux desktop experience though. High DPI scaling issues, audio suddenly entirely disappearing, and relatively slow Wifi were a few issues I've had. No dealbreakers, just trying to balance the optimism :)

#Lemmy really, really needs a "Block domain" feature like Mastodon has. Now that the "threadiverse" has taken off every "All" timeline is 99% porn, shitposts and memes. Not being able to easily filter this out as a user is pretty annoying.
