A broke guy came into the bike co-op tonight to get some help. He had been given a bike with no seat clamp, a chain that wasn’t on, and a slightly bent rear wheel. We showed him how to put on the chain, helped him get the wheel to a point where it worked well enough for the moment, and I found him a $2.50 seat clamp. He heard the price and said, “I’ll have to get that next time,” so we put the clamp on and told him to pay us next time instead.

@freemo in general they also have philosophical and philanthropic goals - giving away bikes, selling bikes at low costs, teaching people to maintain and repai bikes, getting restored bikes to people in need, etc.

@freemo I think they’re common in most cities of a given size. Here in Baltimore we have Velocipede, BBW - a worker-owned bike store collective with two locations, another co-op dedicated to getting bikes to kids in one of the poorer parts of town as well as other regional co-ops to get bikes to refugees, asylum seekers and returning prisoners, etc. and we’re a city of <600K people!

My wife saw somebody asking for help to haul away some trash on NextDoor (IIRC), and noticed that there was a bike in the pic! She wrote to the lady, collected the bike as well as a couple wheels and odds and ends and we took it down to our local charitable bike co-op, Velocipede. If you see mostly working bikes or bike parts, you should do the same!

One of the more frustrating exchanges I see on social media:

a: Vote for Biden!
b: But Biden has done bad things!
a: But Trump is so much worse!
b: If that’s your only reason, it’s not enough to make me vote.

I would like to point out four small facts:

1. Biden has done a bunch of good things.
2. Trump didn’t.
3. Trump has promised to do such terrible things that “not Trump” is enough for me.
4. People against voting Biden don’t have another plan of any kind.

@pinkyfloyd my strongly held belief is that I want everyone to live and thrive and be in peace and also that I am not capable of knowing what it would take to make that happen and so I should keep my mouth shut.

Watching an old Twitter pal fight on another site to explain that he’s definitely not a Zionist, but he supports Israel, but he doesn’t support the actions of the government, but…

If you’re going to have these conversations online, which I will never do, you need to spend a great deal of time watching other people navigate it so you can decide how exactly you want to get labeled a genocidal monster for using a word that reminds me people of a specific conflict that you forgot ever happened.

Everyone is having fun dunking on Lance Armstrong, but I too am curious about fairness with regards to trans athletes!

For instance: given how good sports are for kids’ self-image and the growing hostility of conservatives, how do we make sure that youth sports are welcoming to trans kids?
