Journalists like to have a record of their work, and I follow a lot of scientists here who post long threads explaining their research. Archivists and other scholars also want a lasting record of work they do. So if the fediverse isn't for that stuff, they'll continue to be elsewhere.... The counter will be that anyone can start an instance and run it for as long as they want...but there is a cost in time, expertise & money to do that. It's a big barrier.
I find it interesting that the most common response I got yesterday when I realized I couldn't migrate posts to another server (mine is going bye-bye) is that the fediverse is for ephemera. Which, ok, most of my posts fit in that category, although some don't, like threads shared thousands of times that I sometimes send to people in the chronic illness/disability communities outside of mastodon. If this network is only for ephemera, it's not for anything serious. #fediverse
I have threads with reporting in them, with tips for people with long COVID, and other stuff I want to keep. If anyone knows how to migrate posts please LMK.
So the "strength" of the #fediverse is decentralization but somehow that means when a server is shut down everything on it gets lost forever? I am struggling with this...like why would anyone use this network??? I might be done here.
Sen. Van Hollen posts picture on bluesky sitting at a table with Kilmar Abrego Garcia and this message: "I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return."
I like to take photos of the landscapes & wildlife here on Kauai, so here's Hawaiian monk #seal H92 (they're all tagged). About 1400 of these seals exist today & NOAA has done a great job increasing their numbers of late. They dig these face trenches in the sand to cool off but it's a good metaphor for a lot of things these days. #photography#animals#mammals#Hawaii#beach#ocean
An NBA player (Damian Lillard, Milwaukee Bucks) has been cleared to play just 3 weeks after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot in his leg. This is a remarkable timeline (months of treatment with blood thinners is typical) and I'm sure many physicians are skeptical about him being OK to play.
For people still wearing N95s and the like: The federal office that ensured masks met the N95 or KN95 standards has been destroyed. So any masks sold in the US could well be counterfeit or inadequate.
