Well, that is simply magnificent.

The trailer for "Ennio", a documentary about Ennio Morricone, one of films most accomplished and prolific composers, up there with John Williams and Leonard Bernstein.
You can watch the movie for free (in the US, at least) on Amazon Prime.
When BlueSky first dropped, I was all in. But it was low traction and crickets.
But some folks suggested I revisit. And I did. Wow have things changed.
BlueSky has truly turned into something both INTERESTING and WONDERFUL.
Back in the rotation, along with Mastodon and Threads.
Please do follow me on BlueSky at "davemark.com".
And give BlueSky a look if it's been a while...

PSA:
Bought a new Apple Watch Series 10.
Def happy with the watch, but something about the change in size, new woven charging cable, new band prevents my charging stand (see pic) from keeping a solid connection with the watch.
Twice now, have woken up to find my watch did not charge. The Series 10 does not quite fit on the stand in the same way.
Anyone else have this experience?
iOS 18.1beta5 Camera Control adds ability to switch to selfie mode.
Tried it. Works well, worth knowing.

The way passwords are managed under iOS 18/iPadOS 18/Sequoia has changed. A lot.
If you're not familiar with the new Passwords app, take a minute to go through the walkthrough below. I found it informative, readable, helpful...
Apple:
"When your iPhone detects that you’re outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, it alerts you — on the Lock Screen, you get a prompt that you can send and receive messages via satellite. Otherwise, you get a notification to Use Messages via Satellite when you open the Messages app."
Looks like it's free, at least for the short term.
All the details here...
"Right to Repair for Your Body"
At first glance, I thought this was about fixing a broken prosthetic limb.
But far from it, this is about a campaign to make your own versions of outrageously priced life-changing medicines.
Fascinating read.

"Hopefulness is not a neutral position — it is adversarial. It is the warrior emotion that can lay waste to cynicism. Each redemptive or loving act, as small as you like says the world and its inhabitants have value, and are worth defending. It says the world is worth believing in."
-- Nick Cave
You can use your iPhone to find your Apple TV remote:
- iOS 17 or later
- Apple TV Remote or Siri Remote (2nd generation)
Here's how:
- Open Control Center
- Tap the iPhone remote
- Pick the Apple TV with the lost remote (if you have more than one)
- Tap the Find button (see pic)
It's actually a bit of fun. Give it a try, even if you have your remote in hand.
Pass this along...
Beatles fan?
This is a MASSIVE collection of media (audio and video) that you might never have seen/heard before.
Follow the link, scroll that numbered list below the video pane (not obvious it scrolls).

IMO, Apple would NEVER make this Patreon decision if shareholder pressure didn’t force them to depend so heavily on share value growth and, therefore, on services revenue growth.
Flawed capitalism effect.
Apple forcing Patreon to fork over 30% feels like a restaurant grabbing 30% of the waiter tip pool.
Complicated by the fact that Patreon has already grabbed a percentage of that tip pool.

"Apple is eliminating the option to Control-click to open Mac software that is not correctly signed or notarized in macOS Sequoia"
You can still run Mac apps you download from the net, but you'll need to go through System Settings -> Privacy and Security to enable it.
Apple making it harder to support Indie devs who choose to stay outside the App Store. Safer for users? Perhaps. But not sure how hiding the old Control-click way is any safer.

"Just two weeks after release, the latest chapter of Apple's "The Underdogs: OOO" has been pulled, under withering criticism from the Thailand government and viewers."
Very rare for Apple to pull an ad, scrub it from the various servers.
Interesting story.

"Time strikes licensing deal with OpenAI"
- OpenAI gets all of Time's content, past and present, to train their AI
- OpenAI will cite Time in its responses to user queries and will link back to the original content source on Time's site
Not clear if any compensation is involved. Expecting more and more of these sorts of agreements.
AI training gathering steam.

"A few people get rich because they buy other people’s time and profit from it. Because they have a patent on a product that others urgently need. Because they buy a piece of land that increases in value and because society builds infrastructure around it. In the process, they destroy the environment to harvest the resources."
Do über-wealthy people earn that money? Deserve that money?

On the magic number of subs a streaming service needs:
""But those subscribers want lots of options, and the costs of making enough programming can be enormous. As a result, a streaming service’s profitability depends in large part on how many paying subscribers are needed before those TV shows and movies become cost-effective."
Great read. TL;DR, the magic number seems to be 200 million subs. Netflix, Disney, Amazon only ones there.
