@andrewprice@GossiTheDog When I'm deeply unhappy with a product/service, I usually don't jump to the next product/service the person who created the one I didn't like creates
The events that have happened here today marks a new era for the internet. Websites that derive their value from user-submitted content are continuing their move towards sealing off that content and information from the world. Their libraries were created by everyone, but will soon be available to only those who pay.
In 2020, Signal bootstrapped a small board, drawing on people close to Signal or directly involved. We are grateful to Moxie, Brian, and Meredith for working during this phase to grow and advise Signal. Meredith and Brian will remain on the Board for an interim period, before stepping off to focus on their leadership duties–Meredith as Signal’s President, and Brian staying on as Signal’s CEO, following a search.
- There's a brand new #jpeg encoder around called jpegli, and it promises to improve JPEG encoding by implementing some of #jpegxl's quantization heuristics. How does it fare? I wrote about it: https://giannirosato.com/blog/post/jpegli/ - The #av1 subreddit is dark amidst the #reddit blackout. Interested in following AV1 news outside Reddit? @buzzdee You already reached out on GitHub and opened an issue. We are going to investigate it further, but if the answer ends up not satisfying you, I would encourage you to contact me privately if you'd like to communicate more directly. A public post isn't going encourage my support very much, unless you are looking for support from encoding professionals within your Mastodon circles, in which case I'd explicitly acknowledge that if I were you.
If you care about #signal , you should want #jpegxl support, especially as Apple now supports the image format ecosystem-wide. On Signal's iOS & macOS clients, users will become frustrated if they can view an image but can't send it to anyone using their favorite messaging platform while alternatives like #telegram support JXL. Please bring attention to this feature request:
Many seem worried this will turn into another KHTML/WebKit situation, but considering how many companies (eg Valve) rely on WINE I have higher hopes myself.
In #WWDC, it looks like Apple may have secretly dropped a hint about a new feature in Safari. Hopefully this is legit and we can welcome #jpegxl to Safari & the Apple ecosystem soon!!
@thelinuxEXP@boilingsteam@jorge Do you know if the Firefox Flatpak still defaults to xwayland, or does it use Wayland by default now? Only reason I still install Flatseal.
Today I released Aviator 0.4.0 for #linux. Besides the audio filters, this is a special release because the version of SVT-AV1 I'm shipping features custom psychovisual optimizations & a new tune that seems to prove itself in real-world testing. My eyes agree with the metrics here, and this was only possible with #Flatpak, which lets me ship my own version of SVT-AV1 that is different from the system's. Look at that, a GUI outperforming most CLI implementations by default! #av1
