That's another peaceful but extremely spirited protest in the books! This one was a little different from the other #50501movement#protests. Instead of starting out with speakers, we started out with a really loose, leaderless crowd that wound up focused around the street out front of the state capitol. We stood there with our signs, chanting SELL YOUR TESLA at any Tesla unfortunate enough to drive by 😂 as well as all the standard anti-Trump and anti-Musk chants. Somebody brought a drum...
...and kept kinda beating it off beat, but nobody cared. The whole crowd was off beat, all of us, and proud of it.
I was waving an upside down US flag in distress-- but not because I am a pessimist; quite the opposite. If I were a pessimist I would be sitting at home saying "we're doomed" instead of screaming "FUCK DONALD TRUMP" with thousands of other people.
The US flag in distress is not surrender. Denying or minimizing the severity of our situation would be surrender. In any case...
...I'm one of God knows how many USians who recently ordered a Ukrainian flag and it's still in the mail. (I'm seeing even more of those at our protests.)
Then we heard from some of the original #50501movement organizers and an immigrant who wanted to tell us about his experience coming to this country. He said he initially worked as construction worker and helped build a lot of houses in a town near our city. That town has recently been taking anti-immigrant stances, and he was like...
...."You're sleeping in houses we immigrants built." He urged us all to stand up for our neighbors, for their sake and our own.
There was a lady carrying a small dog in her fleece jacket who was going around handing out free #IdesOfTrump post cards that she would stamp and address to the White House for us. I filled out one for myself, and one for my neighbor whose arthritis keeps him from coming out and standing for hours. Mine said "Hey Trump-- go to hell! Not that you need telling" and...
...my neighbor had me write "Hey Trump- You've destroyed your family & friends, stop destroying us!"
Make sure you get your post card fuck you to Trump in the mail today! 😆 We're sending him an avalanche of hate mail, because why not.
Favorite signs: "NO MIKE WE ARE NOT PAID PROTESTERS, WE ARE ANGRY AMERICANS" "MAKE RACISM WRONG AGAIN" "TRANSGENDER MICE AND GOP SPINES, BOTH FICTIONAL" "WHAT IN THE NAZI BULLSHIT IS THIS?"
WOW just got back from the veterans' march, which overshot the event permit's estimated crowd size by 2 orders of magnitude.
With very good reason, the anger is extremely intense. Every time a speaker mentioned Republicans, there were many shouts of "COWARDS" and "TRAITORS" and "WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICANS??" among deafening boos.
There were also chants of "FUCK CHUCK SCHUMER," and this was a crowd with lots of federal workers in it.
Yes, I know it is nauseating to see them getting rid of the words "BLACK LIVES MATTER" on the street in DC.
But it is only showing how TERRIFIED they STILL ARE. They have a trifecta in government and cannot govern. They're too scared to hold town halls. They are triggered by yellow words on pavement stating an obvious fact. Their entire existence is fear.
You can get a 200 pack of Black Lives Matter stickers on this Etsy, people of DC. Just sayin'.
Because we aren't #MAGA and we don't really do the actual Julius Caesar thing, we're doing a postcard campaign on the #IdesOfMarch! March 15th is the #IdesOfTrump and we're all sending him postcards to tell #Trump how much he sucks.
This is a sample poster from the #50501movement in California. But March 15 will see #protests nationwide. check your state capitol or city hall event schedule, and make sure to check https://fiftyfifty.one for an event near you. Or start your own! Seriously, anyone can start an event on that website, and if it's just you and a few friends standing on an overpass with a sign, AWESOME!
Oh BTW by "seventh protest" I mean my seventh in February and March.
The US #protests are peaceful and not traps like we were expecting. Nobody's showing up to counter protest, not now. #MAGA is getting scared and quiet.
So if you're able to turn out, do it! Don't be afraid! I promise you, it makes you feel SO MUCH better to stop doomscrolling and get out among other people who feel the same.
Even if you just get a few friends and stand on an overpass with a sign, you'll get a lot of support.
Well, I just went to my seventh protest, a very big and very loud pro- #Ukraine march.
It was, again, more solemn than the #50501movement#protests I've been to, which tend to express all the outrage with a lot of humor.
There was one funny moment where an organizer who is Ukrainian, overcome with emotion at the size and passion of the crowd, started to do a gesture that was truly meant to say "Thank you from the bottom of my heart." But before he went straight arm he realized he didn't...
...want to look AT ALL like Elon Musk in a picture, so he stopped, laughed, and looked embarrassed. Everyone laughed because we all knew what he meant.
Some local dignitaries joined in and we marched through the city streets peacefully, shouting #STANDWITHUKRAINE! And at the end we had a minute's silence for the fallen heroes of Ukraine.
I will continue to turn out any time there is a protest against Trump/Musk and for Ukraine! It's just a bonus that the weather is warming up.
@IntentionallyBLANK@alexlunaview The fools don't even have to look up from their screens! All you have to do is go to https://fiftyfifty.one and you see events every day all over the country, everything from marches in big blue cities to people holding up a sign over an overpass. There are whole reddit forums, some of them city specific, for people organizing protests. Look at the event calendars of state capitols and city halls.
Protests are literally everywhere but in the news.
There were a number of speakers from academic labs in the area, and from a student who bravely spoke about his conversations with the dean of his institution.
There's been some real cowardice in the face of the anti-DEI attacks from this recklessly destructive regime.
That student is right: not only is a commitment to diversity both practically and morally essential, we cannot bend the knee to these evil bullies.
Where will it end? You know if you give up any ground to these Nazis, they're only going to take more.
We all need to stand strong and stand together and not give an inch.
I really feel for these students. I too showed up to a STEM-heavy school excited about all I could accomplish. I also was not expecting a life and death fight, and I got one anyway.
I will do anything that is in my power to support these brave young trainees.
I've been going to protests at every opportunity, because fuck this shit, obviously.
I always take lots of pictures and text everything I see and hear to my 70 year old neighbor, so he can feel like he's there. He would love to come, but his arthritis is currently keeping him from standing for so long.
He signed us up to go to a town hall with our Representative, and as of last night like 1400 people were signed up for a venue that only holds about 600. We're on the wait list lol.
And our Representative is a Dem who's been pretty good! Hard core pro Ukraine, didn't censure Al Green, generally voting the right way.
It's going to be madness even in a district like ours, so I can only *imagine* what's going to go down in the red districts. No wonder the Republican Congresscritters aren't willing to face the public.
The Last Rose of Summer is a true story about corruption in #cancer research. I discovered a cheap, plant-derived drug that could replace some much more toxic (but more lucrative) therapies. #BigPharma got involved and suppressed the research. Eventually I had to publish the story in thinly veiled fiction and survive a bunch of murder attempts."Mary Austin" is a pseudonym, as my publisher forced me to use one. So... hi, I'm "Mary." 🤷♀️
