@julie@hacks4pancakes@ChickenPwny Yes, right now I think anybody who holds their conference in Florida or Texas is just telling their LGBT, nonwhite and female staff "We straight up don't care about your human rights and safety." When the NAACP and HRC put travel warnings on a state, businesses shouldn't be holding conventions there. FFS, there are other paces to go.
@lowqualityfacts During residency I once got home so tired I shut the cats out of the bedroom and forgot they then had no litter box. When I woke up, the poor cats had knocked some papers off my desk and used it as litter, sparing the carpet. I praised and petted them and gave them treats for being such good boys and doing their best.
Unfortunately, they learned that while using the litter box is good, peeing on papers is WAY BETTER! YOU GET TREATOS! And I had to stop leaving any papers around.
@iaruffell@temptoetiam Scotland is wise to do so, as men can get HPV related cancers too. The boys also benefit. Of course those hypocritical "usual suspects" are averse to facts, though, so they make it sound as if there's some moral conflict here.
I was very grateful to Michael Douglas when he spoke out about his HPV-related throat cancer and raised awareness.
@RhinosWorryMe This is why I follow accounts like Carve Her Name or Shine My Crown. Even whitewashed history contains stories of great bravery, but when you dig into the kind of heroism you get from people with disabilities, women, people born into slavery, it's even more staggering for what they overcame. And the fact that many of these heroes were considered "deranged" like Benjamin Lay reminds us not to rely on the approval of others for our moral compass.
@RhinosWorryMe Right??! This guy is just blowing me away this morning. I mean, all of us are wondering WTF we're going to do about a second Trump term. This guy lived during slavery, which is fascism that doesn't affect white people yet. Given that he had serious disabilities in the 18th century, he had the most right of anyone in his community to say "But what can I do in the face of all this injustice? Who would even listen to me?" And he not only spoke out but went full steam ahead. 🤯
Nothing to see here, just an 18th century Pennsylvanian Quaker man born with dwarfism who ran away to sea in his youth, learned of the horrors of slavery, and became a radical abolitionist and eventually a cave dwelling, gender conscious vegetarian animal rights activist too. 🤯 This is why kids don't get into history; people like the "Quaker comet," as Benjamin Lay became known, get written out.
Dude would have been a hell of a follow on Mastodon.
If people are gonna cheer for Luigi Mangione, I'd just like to point out that my book is also radically against medical industry murder, and I didn't commit any crimes. People tried to kill me over the damn book, but I don't own or want a weapon.
And action like this has a much higher chance of saving future lives than killing a CEO.
The Kindle version's only $2.99 and everything I did is legal free speech, no matter how shocking the content. 🤷🏼♀️
In the morning I drink my caffeine And without it I might be quite mean I guess there's worse vice And it keeps me so nice But don't take away my roast beans!
I went for my annual skin check at the dermatologist today, which is always a huge relief! One mole removed, and otherwise everything was fine. I'm also grateful to have access to care, this being the US. 😩
Please get your skin checks! #Cancer prevention is always worthwhile.
I get that corporate media want to increase crybully turnout by misquoting #Biden, but I'm pretty sure this is backfiring. Everybody who laughs at racist "jokes" was going to vote #Trump anyway.
Meanwhile in Pennsylvania, via KamalaHQ on Threads:
"Latino radio show host in Pennsylvania: He said Puerto Rico was garbage. That's where we draw the line. It brought all of those feelings right back of how Trump treated us after Hurricane Maria."
@anon_opin I can do all three but learning to swim and cook are to some degree matters of privilege. Not everybody has access to a pool growing up. Not everybody even has access to fresh food, or a parent to teach them to cook. I love cooking and have taught friends as adults who did not have the opportunity to learn to cook when they were kids. People shouldn't be shamed for hard childhood circumstances. And despite having "a very good reason" for not learning they do feel shame. Please don't.
The Last Rose of Summer is a true story about corruption in #cancer research. I discovered a cheap, plant-derived drug that could replace some much more toxic (but more lucrative) therapies. #BigPharma got involved and suppressed the research. Eventually I had to publish the story in thinly veiled fiction and survive a bunch of murder attempts."Mary Austin" is a pseudonym, as my publisher forced me to use one. So... hi, I'm "Mary." 🤷♀️
