Day 5 is done! After five days and 2,300 km (1,429 mi), I arrived in Melbourne! 🎉

Gotta say, I massively underestimated how bad Melbourne traffic is. It took me an hour to ride 21 km (13 mi). The clutch and rear brake sure got a workout.

Day 4 is done.

The Harley has been flawless since Thomas Lee H-D fixed it up. The tyres are getting worn out though, so I'll need to get them replaced at my destination... Melbourne!

Tomorrow is the final 450 km (280 mi) leg of my journey down.

If you're ever passing through Parkes NSW, you HAVE to take a quick detour to see Murriyang the radio telescope.

This telescope was used to receive images during the Apollo 11 moon landing, and was also features in the movie The Dish.

It's a nice ride out there too, with fields and bendy roads.

All good things must come to an end, and it's nearly time for me to leave Melbourne.

But before leaving, I picked up new tyres for the Harley: Metzeler Cruisetecs. I haven't put them through their paces yet, but I've heard good things.

The original Dunlop tyres lasted just over 14,000 km (8,700 mi). Weirdly, the front tyre wore out faster than the rear.

I rode into Forbes NSW yesterday.

It was a perfect day - lots of motorcyclists around, but otherwise no traffic whatsoever on the backroads.

Crumbed steak is a pub staple back home, and I've often lamented that it's basically non-existant outside Central Queensland, but guess what I found at the first pub I stumbled into at Forbes?

Crumbed. Fucking. Wagyu.

It was $40 AUD ($26 USD), but I couldn't say no. Best crumbed steak I've ever had.

@khalidabuhakmeh I don't recall having memory leaks with List<T> before. What's the problem? Objects not being garbage collected because a long-lived List<T> still holds a reference?

I decided to revisit some of the Fediverse alternatives to Reddit after nine months.

kbin.social is overrun with spam.

Beehaw is very quiet. Doesn't seem to have much activity.

Lemmy.world is very active in the larger communities, but they all carry that "default subreddit" vibe, full of memes and shitposts. Smaller communities don't have much activity.

I'm really happy with Mastodon. Tonnes of activity, and no shortage of meaningful discussions.

I'm tempted to get a camera drone like the DJI Mini 3. I think the altitude of a drone would enable more and better photos on my motorcycle trips.

However, I'm a bit unsure whether I want to have to pack and secure another gadget on my motorcycle trips, not to mention carrying and charging more batteries.

Do any other motorcyclists carry a drone on trips? How do you find it?

I rode all the way out to Mount Garnet to see if I could get some cool photos of a mine there, since it was close to a gravel road. Unfortunately, it's all fenced off and I couldn't see anything interesting.

However, it gave me an opportunity to ride back to my accommodation via the highest road in Queensland (1,163 m elevation.) It was later than I had planned and too dark to take photos, but it's a fun, windy road. Perfect for motorcycling!

My goal for the Far North Queensland trip will be to visit Daintree, and the start of the CREB track. I won't actually be traveling it - I think it's closed anyway - but it'll make for a nice photo.

This should be a round trip of 2,000+ km total - my longest motorcycle trip yet.

Can't wait!

I rode all the way up Mount Stuart in Townsville QLD, Australia. There are some nice views up here.

It looks like most of the mountain is used by the Australian military for firearms and explosives exercises. Those sections are all cordoned off, with clear signs like these.
