I haven’t had much to say since the election. Things seemed incredibly bleak then, and have only gotten darker, as the super-rich have climbed over each other to debase themselves at the feet of a monster.

Which is why what @codinghorror and @betsyphd are doing feels so important. The money is hugely significant, but the act itself — as an expression of sacrifice, of commitment, of thanks — feels like hope, at a time when there’s not a lot of that to go around.

Remember them.

Every Musk, every Thiel, every Andreessen. Every Republican in Congress. Every dipshit brother-in-law, every racist neighbor, every cultist moron. Every coward. Every opportunist. Every grifter.

Remember everyone who saw cruelty and division and hate and wanted their piece of it. Remember every fascist who declared themselves.

Do not forget.

And do not forgive.

I’d suspect it of any billionaire — Musk proves it every day — but today we learned that Jeff Bezos doesn’t have any friends who can tell him something he doesn’t want to hear.

We could have saved a lot of this trouble if we’d just put Trump in prison in the 80’s, back when he first started committing crimes.

There’s a good lesson in that about Musk.

Remember the newspapers that can’t find it in themselves to endorse Harris over a fascist, a convicted criminal, an insurrectionist.

Remember that they can be cowed, and blunted, and self-censored.

Remember that they are cowards.

Remember that when faced with a singular example of their most fundamental purpose — afflicting the comfortable — they blinked.

2016: Cubs win the World Series, universe misaligns, Trump elected.

2024: I think you see what needs to happen here.

Every shooting is a tragedy as well as a policy failure.
