    Tech support help please.

I got two old Acer Travelmate 8573 laptops, (trying to get young relatives something cheap to join a minecraft server on).

One of the HDDs seems to be dead (the other is probably almost dead), so I got a cheap little SSD with windows loaded to test/fix it.

New SSD with windows freezes on boot screen. I try Ubuntu on USB, it also freezes on boot screen.

I think the old laptops only support BIOS not UEFI.

Is there a cheap way to get an OS to boot on a new SSD?

@ned @philcolbourn I recall @adam saying during a show several years ago that early development/funding came from US intel. Not sure how trustworthy that is.

@ned @philcolbourn when I do 250g sugar (with wine yeast) the sugar just barely dissolves after much shaking/aerating. I think this is about the limit.

@ned Weird, I was just talking about this with my brother in law last week, similar situation, wondering what Pokemon to start the boy on. For us, we wanted to keep it to the original 150 (to keep it simple), but the original Gen 1 games have outdated type rules (for super effective stuff) so it might be confusing. We ended up deciding on Leaf Green or Fire Red which are basically remakes of the original games with the modern type rules and features. Undecided if we go PC EMU or handheld.

@ned 250g I find pretty good for wine yeast. But if your using bakers yeast or beer yeast it will be too much, try 100g ish. Or do a few, at say 75g 100g and 125g in the same batch.

@ned You need way more sugar. I was using about 100g of white sugar when I was using bakers yeast. I'm using about 250g sugar with wine yeast.

@ned I also find him to be a good antidote for radical/extreme thinking, I have bought Better Angels for a leftist nihilist friend and rationality for a leftist neurotic friend, i think it helped them. Whereas they wouldn't even give look at Peterson or Christian sources.

@ned but his charts dont lie even if you dont agree with the conclusions he draws from them. Better angels was like watching him crack a nut with a sledgehammer just when you think he is finished a topic he gives you another chart and another and another he really snows you under with evidence.

@ned Steven Pinker made a good case (Better Angles of our Nature or Enlightenment now, I forget) that compared to historic levels it is super low. https://stevenpinker.com/files/pinker/files/has_the_decline_of_violence_reversed_since_the_better_angels_of_our_nature_was_written_2017.pdf

Should be lots of bubbles after a few days. When bubbles have reduced to ~10% of their maximum (about 1.5~2 weeks), tighten lid fully to carbonize (~2 days) bottle will bulge.

    Put in fridge.

Sediment should stay at the bottom, don't shake the bottle don't disturb sediment it tastes crap.

Add a tiny amount of wine yeast (like 1cm2 on the tip of a knife). Add wine nutrient (the guy at the brew shop said it would keep the yeast alive/healthy or something idk).

Close lid and shake to dissolve/aerate.

*Refill the bottle with the juice in the glass. Give excess to kid who is jealous that Dad keeps ruining all the good apple juice.

Tighten lid so that a small amount of gas can escape. Keep somewhere with reasonably constant temperature.

@ned @ThatCrazyDude I should write this down for future copy pasting, my method learned from @philcolbourn :

I use cheap coles/woolies 2L 'preservative free' apple juice (or grape/blackcurrant). Even though it actually has vitamin C as a preservative which in theory is bad for yeast, it still seems to work well. I tried expensive fresh squeezed stuff once and it went bad.

Pour out a glass*, close lid and shake to aerate.

    Add 230~260g sugar.
