We stayed at Baker Creek in Great Basin National Park last night. It's very pretty, but very cold. Neither of us was able to keep warm through the night, even with cold-rated sleeping bags and extra blankets

First day in Utah and we went looking for topaz at Topaz Mountain. The mountain is all chopped up from people looking for gems. It was lots of hammering and chiseling with nothing to show for it.
I had better luck finding topaz in the washes, but they were small.
Lots of open country out here.

Great great grandpa homesteaded out here in Il Zane, Utah, from the 1910s to the 1940s. We found the ruins of the place and explored a bit

There was more water in the valley back then, according to his telling of it, but it was still dry, so he dug this canal himself, with help from our great grandma, who was just a girl at the time.

My neighbor asked me to post an ad on craigslist for the mattress she bought and never used because it's not firm enough for her.
I agreed because she's mostly nice, but then she asked me to take all the inquiries and forward them to her. I said I would just put her phone number on it, so they could cal her directly.
"Oh no, just have them call you and then you can tell me who wants it."
I said no to that

She said she would give me a commission if it sells, but I don't believe her at all, lol. This is the lady whose husband stole all the bananas off my tree after she asked if he could have just a few.

She just came over to tell me she got an offer. Someone text her to say that they want the mattress, but they are on their honeymoon in Wisconsin right now, but that they can send her a cashier's check for $100 over what she's asking and then they'll send a guy to come get the mattress

Despite it being an unseasonable and unpleasant 93 degrees outside, I managed to do a 13-mile bike ride, harvest silty soil from the river, mix that with manure to make my patented special potting mix, and repot 11 plants. Phew ...

All of my long-suffering Thai basil plants have been upgraded to bigger and better homes. The pots they vacated have been repurposed to house the tomatillo seedlings I was given last weekend. And my Stapelia grandiflora, aka carrion plant, aka starfish flower, aka starfish cactus, while technically in the same pot, was removed and replanted with a great deal more soil. Maybe I'll get a stinky flower from it for being nice

Dreamt i was at the beach and saw some guys cutting bike locks and stealing bikes, so i ran inside a nearby building to grab my keys so i could unlock my bike and get out of there before they stole it, too.
But in the one minute it look me to get my keys and return, they had stolen my bike. I confronted the ringleader and told him i need my bike back. He refused, so i slapped him and stole the walkie talkies he was using to communicate with his crew.
I radioed to them, pretending to be him, and saying he needed them to bring the bike back.
A minute later, i saw one of them walking back to where my bike had been stolen from, but without the bike. I approached him as well, telling him i needed my bike back.
He agreed, unlike his boss, and said he would take me to my bike, but first he had some errands to run. He said i could come with him.
The errands turned out to be looking for other things to steal and sell to get cash to buy meth. We eventually found an angle grinder and he said we could go get my bike now. (During all this, we talked about global warming. He was deeply concerned about it, and about associated sea level rise. He pointed out many landmarks down at the beach that would end up under water.)
Angle grinder in hand, we walked back to his house, a run-down little cottage in a low-income neighborhood by the shore. But then he told me he needed to feed his cats before he got me my bike. He fed them and then asked me if i wanted a hot dog. His roommate had boiled up a whole pot of hot dogs.
I was eager to get my bike and get out of there, but a hot dog sounded good, so i said sure and he served me one. Upon my first bite though, ketchup and mustard squeezed out and spilled in a big glob on the floor, which i them accidentally stepped on in my socks (they were a shoes off inside household)
I apologized and asked for paper towels to clean up my mess. He gave me some and said he would be right back with my bike.
But as i was just finishing cleaning up the spilled condiments, i saw him head out the front door. I asked his roommate where he was going and he replied that he thought he was taking their dog for a walk.
I didn't want to let him get away, so i ran out the door after him, still wearing my socks that had ketchup and mustard on them. He was indeed walking a dog and crossing an intersection at a crosswalk as i approached. I didn't make it there before the light turned red, so I tried to jaywalk across. There was too much traffic though, so i had to wait for a break to run for it. Meanwhile, he and the dog were getting close to disappearing.
I darted through traffic, almost being hit by one car, and made it across the street just as he turned a corner and disappeared.
Then i woke up.
