This doesn't get adequate attention in this piece, but to restore appropriate emphasis: Jordan Peterson is a stack of excrement.

It's not like this is new information - the NY Times covered this back in 2019 (regarding phones, but still relevant because of overlaps in data use and companies collecting data)

I will say, though, given Mozilla's eager embrace of better adtech I'm really excited for their next partnership with a consortium of defense contractors to make more polite attack drones.
(and yes, this is a shitpost, and yes, in 2024, this disclaimer is required)

And there are countless similar stories, and even more examples of adtech being used to deliver malware (want some ransomware with that surveillance?).
So yeah - the idea that we should all be waylaid into the service of the people who created the problem, expand the problem, profit from the problem, and lobby for the right to continue the problem, is straight up absurd.

Note to the Mozilla and Firefox people explaining math and differential privacy as justifications for trampling consent in an effort to support the advertising industry:

To disable Mozilla's data grab, enter:
about:preferences#privacy
in the address bar.
Then, scroll down to "Website Advertising Preferences" and DESELECT the option for "Allow websites to perform privacy-preserving ad measurement"

Hey, @mozilla - go fuck yourself.
When you opt me in to data collection via an upgrade, you destroy trust and goodwill.
We need Firefox to remain a reliable option, and you seem hell bent on destroying that.

If I was smarter I would have done this years ago, but hey - better late than never.
I was setting up a new computer, and finally documented the steps I take to get the thing ready to use.
I've been doing versions of this for years, so I figured I'd document the process and save future me some time.

Yeah.

The different names applied to phishiung variants (ie, smishing, quishing) do more harm than good because they introduce more inaccessible terminology into a space where people are already intimidated.
Just say "phishing", and then clarify that phisihing attachs can occur via multiple ways, including text or using a QR code.

The fact that, in the US, access to even mediocre health insurance is tied to our jobs forces people to make impossible choices: do I tolerate abusive behavior, unethical behavior, and potentially illegal behavior, or do I put the security and health of myself and my family at risk?
I have observed this more times than I can count in my career, including in my very recent past (but thankfully, not in my present! ).
