I think this is my first time being on the other side of a #TwitterMigration. It's pretty cool! For all the new folks here making an #introduction for those concerned about not being able to find POC, I strongly recommend starting by following hashtags and using those to follow people who use/are associated with them. I did that and found a really active, engaged, diverse, and vibrant Black community here. Use the following hashtags in particular:

#BlackFedi #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #BlackFriday (I joined last November when this hashtag was created).

There are other hashtags associated with other communities - our Indigenous siblings use #Indigenous and maybe #NDN, not sure. And every once in a while, someone will tweet a bunch of good accounts to follow. Personally, I could do with more #french #francais or #spanish #espanol content, but that's kind of on me.

Don't know about your instance, but mastodon.online is slow as molasses today, and plenty of 503 errors.

Did we learn nothing from the last #twittermigration about building in excess capacity?

What's going to happen if there is a #MetaInvasion.

Donate to your instance. Go to [instance address]/about and find the donations link. Give them the financial means to manage these growth spurts.

And instance admins... please be prepared. Anticipate, so we are not always reacting.

Things I like about current #TwitterMigration vs last year

Mastodon Finishing School seems to have gotten the etiquette lessons out of its system.

Mods of smaller servers -✋- are much better at blocking horrible people/servers early and often. We're a little better at online safety, especially for marginalized folks.

Extant servers survived the November hug of death, systems are stable. No scramble for funds.

People are a bit used to the weirdness.

If there was one piece of advice I could give to new Mastodon users who are finding their feeds quiet or boring, it is to follow as many people and hashtags as you can. This is not Twitter; there is no algorithm, it is not going to fill your feed with stuff it thinks you like. You have to curate it yourself. Once you do, though, it's so much more vibrant and rewarding than Twitter has been for a year. #TwitterMigration #Twitter
