Figured it’d be a good time to finally get on Mastodon. Since it’s not currently melting down. And it’s powered by passionate volunteers instead of workers exploited by a petulant billionaire. And it’s not funded by surveillance capitalism. And doesn’t actively contribute to the undermining of democracy. There are a few reasons. #RIPTwitter #twittermigration #TwitterRefugees

This will probably be my last toot mentioning the #birdsite. Instead of putting the spotlight on Elon, I want to thank all the #Twitter employees for their amazing achievements over its 16 year history.

Your contributions have not gone unnoticed, and you've created a space like no other. I am beyond grateful for everything that you've done. I may just be a random, but you've made such a valuable part of all of our lives.

? Recognize you’re joining an established community. Have a little grace and humility.

? Get cozy with your account settings and set up your space in a way that works for YOU.

? Don’t try to recreate Twitter here. It was designed to be not-Twitter. But it’s pretty great anyway.

? Tip your admins. They’re unpaid volunteers and likely paying for your instance from their own pocket.

The silver lining to the #TwitterMigration: maybe this will result in more funding, more people willing to develop the Fediverse to its full potential.

As I keep telling you, there's more to this endeavour than being a Twitter replacement!

Welcome #TwitterMigration! A few tips:

- introduce yourself with #introduction and pin it, and hashtag a few interests

- following from that, hashtags are very important here. Search won't show all results on every server and there's no algorithm so hashtags are how people find you and your posts

- #Mastodon and #MastodonHelp for help/tips

- PLEASE CW politics and drama and use image descriptions! Very important here.

If you're from #Twitter with the #TwitterMigration, RIGHT NOW is the time to let your people know you're on Mastodon. Don't wait until that channel is shut off (if or when).

I absolutely do not know everything about #Mastodon but as quickly become an evangelist for it and the greater #fediverse.

If you, or anybody else you know, need assistance getting onboarded, just ask. There are plenty of friendly, non-judgmental people ready to help.

I was originally gonna keep my TW acct until 12/31 to help ppl w #TwitterMigration. Then I realized that the entity itself was becoming more toxic much quicker, so set my farewell date at Thanksgiving. Now even that seems too far away.

When I first used it, a few days ago, about 14% of my Twitter follows had Mastodon addresses in their bios.

Today, it's 16%.

It's a fun tool to measure how the #TwitterMigration is going.

Evan Prodromou, who helped inspire & create the #ActivityPub protocol that makes @Mastodon run, called this recent #Twittermigration a “tipping point”.

Hey journalists! Mastodon is not a “platform”. Platforms were invented in the wake of the last financial crisis to consolidate power among specific companies by mining people of of their personal data for profit online. Mastodon does not consolidate, only connects. It does not amplify algorithmically, or mine people. Any “learning curve” should include reflection on why you ever accepted “services” aimed at data extraction as “natural” or even “social” to begin with. #twittermigration
