@Gargron listening to the consumers is good. But don't listen to their every demand. Especially the ones from #twittermigration. I personally want the ability to follow someone but not see their posts on my feed cause I want to add them to separate lists and only look at them at decided times

When I worked customer support, I learned that if I could get a customer to move from “I need this solution” to “this is my problem” I was usually able to help them better, often by suggesting something other than what they originally had in mind. Getting them from “my solution” to “my problem” wasn’t always easy.

Let’s all keep this in mind when someone says “I need this Twitter feature” that Mastodon doesn’t have.

While it is still #ThrowbackThursday (and already #FlashbackFriday in other countries), here's another round of #Fediverse history.

#DidYouKnow there were various “migrations” before the #TwitterMigration 2022?

I can not remember the years and the order of events, but here are what I can recall:

1. Facebook migration + Twitter migration.

Reason: ToS issue, re: post content, is owned by the service.

During this period (my guess is 2008 to 2013), instances informed users of their content license upfront, very visible.

2. Tumblr migration.

Reason: Tumblr changed their ToS and guidelines, and alienated a big segment of its users.

New instances went online, and a lot of users moved to the Fediverse.

3. Japan SNS migration

Reason: I can't remember exactly what it was about, but I think it was ToS / rules related too.

My guess is, sometime late 2016 and early 2018. The birth of the Top 3 largest Fediverse instances.

4. Twitter Migration Part 2

Reason: reports that Elon Musk will buy Twitter

I think this was in 2021?

5. Twitter Migration Part 3 (2022)

Reason: Elon Musk bought Twitter

If you voted "step down as CEO" in Elon Musk's phony poll, you did something wrong.

His motivation to buy #birdsite was not to run it, but to implement his version of #freespeech. Passing the mantle now means:

* Return to being a user
* Have someone else to pull the potatoes out of the fire
* Transfer #legal responsibility to that someone
* Stop the main drive for #twittermigration
* Recover biz cred
* Being the owner, still keep #twitter as a personal mouthpiece!

In short: he gets it all.

Twitterはそもそもマイクロブログの一つだよね。10年以上前に日本にブログ（当時はWebLogと言われていた）が入ってきた時、相互にリンクを張り合ったりして繋がり、情報をやり取りして豊かなインターネットを作り上げてきた。world wide webだって、それが根本思想だよね。

Given all the #TwitterMigration newcomers, it seems like a good time to re-up my #introduction post:

I am a professor of linguistics at the University of Washington, where I run our Master of Science in Computational Linguistics. I work on computational approaches to syntax and the syntax-semantics interface, the role of #linguistics in #NLP, & on the societal impacts of language technology. On social media, I spend a lot of time debunking #AIhype, for which I find linguistics very useful!

There's a lot of discussion about #birdsite and #journalism right now. While we are still having ongoing conversations about how best to handle our presence there, we can say confidently that we plan on staying on Mastodon indefinitely, barring unforseen circumstances.

In just about a month, we've very clearly seen the value in our presence here, for reaching new people and having great conversations. Here's to the future of the fediverse! #SocialMedia #TwitterMigration

Just be careful what you cross-post! I posted a toot about the new  #Miracleman: The Silver Age comic, brought back from the dead after 30 years by its original author #NeilGaiman (It was his first major comic, cancelled mid-series and shelved for decades under a cloud of controversy.) My re-tweet on the #Birdsite got slapped with a warning, saying it contained "sensetive content." The "sensetive content" turned out to be Neil Gaiman's Mastodon address, @neilhimself 

Twitter stripped out Gaiman's information, as well as the content of the post after it.

The warning has since been removed, but the tweet still cuts off at the address, and now other cross-tweets have warnings. Caveat cross-tweeter!

@georgetakei I’m sure it was the promotion of other sites causing the great #twittermigration and definitely not twitter being bought by an egomaniac who bought it just to break it.

This is apparently the tweet that led to my suspension from Twitter. Right as I was reinstated they announced a new policy that they apparently found me to have retroactively violated

Earlier today Elon Musk said that my ban was temporary, 45 min later he denied my appeal to reinstate my account and confirmed that I am *permanently* banned. The email I just received says the decision cannot be reversed.
I have never once violated Twitters rules or terms of service. I’ve never had a single tweet flagged, my account was permanently banned with no warning and with no reason, after I reached out to Musk for comment.
