@drahardja ultimately I don't think anyone (credibly, anyway) claims that any of the "general strike" calls this author complains about were successful. But again, that doesn't inherently de-legitimize their intentions.

Instead of saying "leave it to the #unions", I would say, "keep trying" and "talk to your friends and like-minded people". #Organizing is ultimately about relationship-building and #solidarity. No one "owns" the idea of a strike, general or otherwise.

Before you call for a “general strike”, read this article, and think about whether you’re speaking from solidarity, or privilege.

“Unlike real strikes, which take a ton of work, calling a general strike is apparently a simple affair. A date is picked, a Facebook post is created, the labor liberal press picks it up, and a general strike is born. This raises the question of under whose authority they are being called.”

A lot of people are supporting Costco for "keeping DEI", but recall that 18,000 Costco Union workers are going on strike on Feb 1.

They are striking over: "seniority pay, paid family leave, bereavement policies, sick time, and safeguards against surveillance."

Don't wash out the labour power with your support of so-called DEI policies when they're not actively supporting the needs and rights of workers.

I joined the Service Employees International Union informational picket today at PeaceHealth Hospital in Bellingham, WA.

Nurse practitioners and physician assistants warn of chronic understaffing and wages insufficient to support the local cost of living.

An SEIU organizer told me PeaceHealth is offering wage increases of only 2-3%. The cost of living in Washington state increased by nearly 6% last year.

In addition to stalled contract negotiations, PeaceHealth has refused to recognize the June 2024 joint union victory of the PeaceHealth and Sound Physicians hospitalist team at St. Joseph Medical Center and United General Medical Center.
