@alex found an error in #Soapbox w/ #Mastodon where if you follow someone and that follow requires approval, but the UI doesn't catch on that the follow has been successful, going into the menu and clicking add or remove from groups causes the site to crash and you have to reload it. Not sure which of these errors caused it
@alex I do wonder though, does this mean that #Soapbox will not support the #Fediverse long-term? I frankly prefer the #Fediverse to #nostr due to post editing, and also malleable passwords (which I prefer to #nostr’s private keys–if a key is leaked for whatever reason, your account is permanently compromised!)
IMHO #Mastodon is the least user friendly and has the fewest featues, except maybe for #Honk but it specifically has a goal of having near 0 features, always purple, and always stable. Try out https://fe.soapbox.pub and you log in with your mastodon account!
@seanking There's no lie in what he said tho, the #Pleroma and #Akkoma devs have been intentionally hostile to @alex out of pure intolerance and it had been a nightmare for him to deal with them.
Frankly I would say that he and #Soapbox and #rebased are better without them, but #Pleroma isn't necessarily in the most vibrant state rn
@bot@alex I hope I'm describing this correctly, but it's a cross between an API and a bridge. It lets you log into #nostr via #Fediverse frontends like #Soapbox or the #Mastodon app.
It definitely has some kinks though. Replies don't work, posts made via #Ditto don't show up everywhere, etc. But it's still very new.
Debating what I do as part of my #redditmigration. I've gotten on #tildes which I'm quite enjoying, and I'd like to #selfhost a #kbin single-user instance as my frontend for a #Reddit style UI, but then I'd have **two** #fediverse handles! Same if I join a nice kbin instance. It'd be great to have my replies on threads to be the same handle as here. I know I can follow kbin/#lemmy instances from my #soapbox instance but trying to cram a link aggregator style feed into a microblog style feed isn't going to work well. Not even sure if self-hosting kbin and trying to federate myself is going to work as well as this instance has.
@feditips - Any sage advice for the cleanest path forward for those wanting to do both?
@kjr It used to be called #Soapbox before @alex split off the frontend from the backend. It's based on #Pleroma but has quote posts and other features.
@kjr@alex Yep! So #Soapbox was originally a fork of #Gab which was a fork of #Mastodon. It eventually was rebuilt by forking #Pleroma and retaining the existing #Soapbox frontend, and now the #rebased backend and #Soapbox (the frontend) have been split apart, with (IIRC) the intention of #Soapbox being a multipurpose frontend that can be used with different #Fediverse software, and #rebased being a lightweight #Fediverse backend software.
You can visit fe.soapbox.pub to check out #Soapbox and try the software with your instance! It works quite well with #Mastodon and #Pleroma especially, I can't remember if it supports #Misskey at all.
Just thought I'd try #Soapbox from @alex out as #Hubzilla is stuck in 90s design and decidedly user-unfriendly. I'd been eyeing #Mastodon for over a year and this is so much more refined with elegant design. Anyone out there running their own instance?
