The filing *appeared* to try to correct an obvious violation of the #law when it abruptly announced revocation of #Harvard’s #SEVP certification w/o proper process. But the 30-day delay does little to address the core questions in the case. The #Trump admin has sought extensive documentation from Harvard, requesting, among other things, coursework for EVERY international student & information on any #StudentVisa holder involved in misconduct or *illegal* activity.
Claiming #Harvard failed to fully comply with their likely extralegal demands, the admin moved last week to revoke its ability to host #InternationalStudents.
So now it is giving Harvard 30 calendar days to provide written documentation & other evidence “to rebut the alleged grounds for withdrawal.”
New from Michelle Pitcher: “Bills in this package are going to swell the Texas pretrial population. That’s going to impact counties first. Local jails, which are already having to send people out of county or out of state in order to keep their populations manageable are going to find they have an even worse problem on their hands.” https://www.texasobserver.org/abbott-house-bail-legislature/
The question before #SCOTUS was whether an agency had complied with a federal #law by issuing a 3,600-page report on the impact of the proposed #railway in #Utah.
The case was closely watched because it became a proxy battle over how far federal agencies may go in assessing the #EnvironmentalImpact of highways, pipelines & other projects before deciding whether to approve them.
7 counties & #oil lobbyists said the project would boost the region’s economy & argued for a narrow reading of #NEPA the National Environmental Policy Act, the 55-yr-old #law for environmental reviews.
"We continue to reject #Harvard’s repeated pattern of endangering its students & spreading American hate—it must change its ways to be eligible to receive generous benefits from the American people," #DHS Secy #KristiNoem nonsensically said in a statement.
In announcing the decision, Noem, without providing #evidence, accused the #university of "fostering violence, antisemitism, & coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party." [#FigLeaf]
In a letter that day, Noem accused #Harvard of refusing to comply w/wide-ranging requests for information on its #StudentVisa holders…. [Though she cited no law or regulation that the university had violated]
Harvard, the nation's oldest & wealthiest #university, enrolled nearly 6,800 #InternationalStudents in its current school year, ~27% of its total enrollment.
#Harvard had argued that the revocation violated its #FreeSpeech & #DueProcess rights under the US #Constitution. In addition, Harvard contended that the revocation failed to comply with #DHS#regulations. The regulations required providing at least 30 days to challenge the agency's allegations & giving Harvard an opportunity to pursue an administrative appeal.
Savannah Chrisley, who hosts a podcast, increased her public presence following her parents’ incarceration. A vocal #Trump supporter, she spoke at the RNC last year & also visited the White House in Feb to lobby for a #pardon for her family members.
During her RNC speech, Savannah Chrisley said her parents were “persecuted by rogue prosecutors in Fulton County due to our public profile”—appearing to try to draw a connection to DA Fani Willis, who indicted Trump & others in connection with their attempts to reverse Trump’s 2020 election loss in Georgia. However, the charges against the Chrisleys were federal & filed under then-US Attorney BJ Pak, who was appointed to the role by #Trump.
In court, prosecutors said the couple conspired to defraud community banks out of >$30M in loans & evaded federal income taxes for years.
“The President is always pleased to give well-deserving Americans a second chance, especially those who have been unfairly targeted & overly prosecuted by an unjust justice system,” WH dpty press sec said.
Trump will soon pardon a reality TV couple found #guilty of #fraud & #TaxEvasion, the White House confirmed. Todd & Julie Chrisley, the fmr stars of USA Network’s “Chrisley Knows Best,” were sentenced to 12 & 7 years, respectively, in 2022. The pardons are likely to be signed Wednesday.
Alright, knowers of consumer law, please take me through which crime this is (maybe point me to the relevant legislation?)
Went to drop my car off for service. The receptionist said if it's over $1000 there is an extra fee. I asked how much and she said she didn't know. She pointed to a laminated piece of paper on the bench which also said there's a fee for transactions but didn't say how much. I asked if it was a percentage, she said yes. I asked what percentage, she said maybe 7%, actually maybe 1%. I asked what the fee is for and who it is charged by, she said "it's just bologna". I asked her to confirm that she would not be telling me how much this fee is, but that she would require me to pay this fee to get my car back, she confirmed this.
When Hillary Clinton was first lady, a furor erupted over reports that she had once made $100k from a $1k investment in cattle futures. Even though it had happened a dozen years before her husband became president, it became a scandal that lasted weeks & forced the White House to initiate a review.
