To anyone that's on Threads, could you snap a screenshot of what Fediverse replies look like now since the update?
Specifically interested if you can see all the replies in a single list or if you have to view them individually. Also curious about how much of the username is shown, does it show domain as well?🤔
Wait...replies to Threads users are now public? As in, more than just the mentioned user can see them?!? At least they mentioned it, is it implemented yet?
Either way, this is GREAT! I've been griping about this for MONTHS.
So...I have a theory on why some people can't seem to gain "traction" on Fedi and it's simpler than most realize.
I simply theorize that it's because corporate social media has taught most people to *not* talk to humans, but to instead talk to the algorithm to get their engagement.
Obviously there's no algorithm here, so they try their usual tactics of engagement baiting or just using certain words in their posts instead of hashtags and expect people to just oogle at their marvelous grammar.
We're humans. Not machines. People, not algorithms.
Talk TO me, not AT me, and you might get somewhere.
Did you know that Mastodon Admins have the power to hide your posts to any user that's not logged in?
They would have to enable "Hide public timeline from logged out users".
Furthermore, enabling "Authorized Fetch" makes it so that users that are logged into an instance that is blocked, cannot see or interact with your posts.
If these things are important to you, you should discuss them with your admin or consider migrating to an instance that has these features enabled.
Otherwise, every post you have set to "public" can be read by *anyone* via the website.
Also, Mastodon has a built in RSS feed for every profile that cannot be disabled without editing the code. This would allow *anyone* to follow you, even without an account, and you would have no idea about it.
I love when someone tries to be snarky and tell me to "look something up", when I'm already VERY well aware of what that something does and it's not what they think...🤦♂️
Authorized Fetch, Mastodon's proprietary feature, does not add "privacy" to Fedi.
All it does is authorize users activity through the Mastodon API so that blocks are enforced more strictly.
It doesn't stop anyone from typing in your profile link and reading your posts, nor does it turn off the RSS feeds built into Mastodon that anyone can subscribe to without your knowledge and be reading your posts...
There's no "privacy" here unless you're account has follow approvals on and you set your posts to "followers only".
This is not signal or session, it's not some sort of bastion for privacy. It's social media, everything is public unless you do something to change that yourself.
Mastodon's limit of 4 hashtags filtered per Hashtag group is really frustrating.
The Fediverse/Mastodon hashtags are unreadable without filtering *at least* 2 dozen...most people spam those hashtags with posts that aren't even related to Fedi or Mastodon.😒🤦♂️
BlueSky users, when bridging to Fediverse, please be mindful of the posts you quote because it seems a lot of people don't allow logged out users to see their posts, causing Fedi users to miss the context and completely ruin the point of bridging in the first place...😳🤦♂️
Can I get some assistance? I'm looking for which one of the updates in the newest Mastodon version is the one that deters harassment on the platform or helps moderators/admins deal with it?
I've been through the patch notes and there's some report list changes and such, but nothing that stands out as assisting to take care of harassment...hasn't that been the most discussed issue recently? Why is it not being addressed?🤨😳
Interrupting my vacation animal & nature posting to congratulate my #ESA colleagues on the amazing #Juice lunar-Earth flyby, the first of it's kind 💪 And it was so nicely precise, that they could save some fuel for extra scientific shenanigans in the Jupiter system!
Btw., if you want to know more here on #fedi, you should read the recent threads my (former) colleague @markmccaughrean who majorly contributed to making those lovely images of Earth & Moon!
Also, to any new Fedi admins spinning up instances, remember, DO NOT import blocklists blindly without doing your due diligence.
The most widely used blocklist is by Oliphant, who has been proven time and time again to add to the blocklist for personal reasons and lie within the list.
Obviously this is harmful to those who do nothing wrong and end up on the list because of a personal beef.
If anyone ever wonders why I usually provide alternate links for the "full size" versions of my images, it's because Mastodon compresses images to 1280px and most of my images will be bigger than that, so I provide those links for anyone wanting to download the full original image.
Anyone in the #fedi know anything about screen printing or printing on fabric/felt in general? Want to get something printed on felt, like how a casino poker table is printed on. No idea where to start. Son made a pirate themed #boardgame & we’d like to print the game board on felt so it can be rolled up and stored in a treasure chest with the rest of the game pieces. I’ve read there are file types needed so a design is required. Retoots appreciated for visibility. Any help appreciated!
