One of the better spots to get a pic of the Hollywood sign: level 4 of the Ovation mall.
I’m not ever committed to want to hike up to take a photo of it, but it’s a fairly okay spot to take an okay photo of it.
The scale of LA is pretty intimidating. But I love big cities. I usually love them a little more dense and less sprawly, and with fewer automobiles. But I love the things I love about LA enough to be okay with that.
I love the diversity and the weather and the people. I love that for things I love a lot, food and film photography, LA is a haven. (I signed up to learn how to shoot motion picture film, with some local film folks)
The immigrant food is a whole other level. The documentary ‘City of Gold’ featuring LA’s famed food writer Jonathan Gold, and my Mexican American friend L’s relentless evangelism of the LA immigrant food scene, and my friend Q’s tutelage of the southeast Asian bits of LA, gave me a crash course.
If I can’t leave this country for a while, I am perfectly happy just coming to LA regularly.
I love this city so much.

Me: I don’t like brunch food
Also me: I love HK ‘western’ brunch food (it’s its own genre of food)
(Chicken chop with two eggs, and a bolo bun and milk tea)
I think my main opposition is having eggs without soy sauce, so next time I go to ‘brunch’ I will bring some and see if I like it more
This is J J cafe in Monterey Park, California. Perhaps the Flushing of California (but you need a car)
Fellow Californians, I suggest we start up a petition to accept Denmark‘s offer. We give ourselves over to unification with Denmark for free. The healthcare (savings!) alone are worth it!
Although I have friends in Illinois who demand their state be included.

Food that we’ve really liked in LA:
- Chunju Han Il-Kwan in K-town: fantastic regional Korean food from.. Chunju. The set lunch at $16 is amazing value. Large variety of mains, some of the best banchan I’ve had outside of Korea
- Harucake right next door is a trendy Instagram famous Korean bakery and cafe. The mugwort injeolmi cake is one of the best cakes I’ve had in a very long time. The soo soo corn latte was also glorious
- Chengdu Taste in Alhambra. Kenji Alt-Lopez’s fave Sichuan place, and now mine too. All around stand out place. Best dan dan noodles.
When I’m in LA with my wife we tend to only eat the great regional Mexican food, but with my parents.. it’s mostly the Chinese and Korean and Thai. Not that I’m complaining coz LA is the best for all of those cuisines for me too.

“The EPA tested for one of the pollutants that measures air quality index – particulate size. This is what the Monterey Bay Air Resource District (MBARD) does when it produces an evaluation of air quality. Neither agency tests for heavy metals. Heavy metals testing was done by Dr. Ivano Aiello of the Moss Landing Marine Labs around the Elkhorn Slough and by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control with Monterey County Environmental Health Department.”—Supervisor Glenn Church, District 2, Monterey County Board of Supervisors https://mailchi.mp/co/supervisor-churchs-february-2025-newsletter?e=68a4a27afc
