I am super stoked that people are leaving the dead bird platform. I don’t care if people join #Bluesky. It’s a good choice for the normies. But well… it has normies. 💁 If you’re happy with your choice, enjoy. You don’t need to inform the users you are leaving. That just makes you look smug.

When I talk about the importance of going all in on the Fediverse, I speak based on experience.

At Opera we built a massive user community. When I quit, we had something like 35 million registered users and 35 million monthly visitors.

The new Opera management did not see the value of that. They believed it was cheaper and better to just use Facebook and that investing in your own community was a waste of money. So they closed down MyOpera and built a following on Facebook and Twitter instead. Then they got caught by the bait and switch when Facebook changed and you would no longer reach your audience, without paying. Later on Twitter changed as well.

This is important to explain to companies and institutions as they go shopping for social media sites to invest in. The best investment is clearly in your own site, being part of the Fediverse. It is not even all that expensive to do. It may take longer to build, but at least it is your own.

Not saying you cannot build a following on those other sites, but your long term strategy should be the Fediverse with your own server.

We try to lead the way here and thus we build Vivaldi Social. Not just for our selves, but to make a point and support the Fediverse.

What I think when people here on the #fediverse explain why #Bluesky is the place to be. How ATProto will evolve and how federation will come really soon. #SarcasmButOnlyHalf

The fact BlueSky shortens to BS feels like an object lesson in how not to name things. The same lesson Paramount/CBS learned with Star Trek: Discovery and the Committee for the Liberation of Terrifying Organisms and Their Rehabilitation Into Society should really have put their finger on earlier.

Je sais pas si le truc que je trouve le plus cringe sur #Bluesky c'est que les blocks soient publics et qu'il y ait des sites pour savoir la liste de qui quelqu'un a bloqué/été bloqué, ou que tout le monde y partage ce genre d'outil en semblant le considérant tout à fait inoffensif voire sain

When i see the number of people talking about #Bluesky on #Mastodon, i realise how many actually haven’t been cured from #FOMO. Tbh i did have fomo after I left birdchan in early 2022, but i was fully immunised a couple of weeks in: the idea of spending so many hours on #socialmedia does not appeal. What people see as a drawback on the #fediverse (not enough frenzy) is exactly what attracts me. No #algorithm to tie me to my phone and still enough of a community to feel connection.

A lot of people are moving from Twitter/X to Bluesky and Threads. There is also an increase here in the Fediverse and we should urge our friends to join here instead!

We know that we cannot trust algorithm controlled sites.
