Alright, I'll admit that my bias is in describing Midwestern suburbs. I don't know anything about what western states are doing. But he specifically mentioned "suburbs", and this has a distinct definition. Our towns and cities have embraced the "mixed use space" with condos and apartments in retail shopping areas (as if that's new).
But this is NOT suburban in the Midwest. Our burbs are generally green lawns with swing sets, backyard pools, and bike/kid friendly sidewalks. But don't tell anybody our secret, ok. 👍
