Long-time Linux desktop user here (but very rarely dealing with server stuff):
The golden rule of backups is to have three copies if everything: The original, one local and one remote backup.
The cool thing about local "snapshots" is that they only take up the space of files that have changed and can be "mounted" almost instantly -- but if they're on the same drive as the original, they don't count as "proper backup" in some regards. They're more like "quicksave" points.
