Assad was backed by Russia and Iran, so his fall weakens their positions. Israel now has a more open corridor from the Golan. Pretending HTS are the good kinds of fundamentalists allows them to turn a blind eye to whatever fuckery they get up to, since the west is only concerned with the macropolitics and their own self interest.
