Lack of replies and global search are limitations of Mastodon software, not of AP as a protocol, or the fediverse as a network. Many fediverse projects have better support for functions like these, although there is FEP work underway to improve on them.
FWIW projects to improve these things have often been knobbled by the MBC (Mastodon Brahman Caste, also known as the Homeowners Association, I think you know who I mean).
