@pounce "tu" is for anyone you're on casual terms with. Like someone you know, even as acquaintances. If you feel like you have to be polite with someone however, usually for more professional contexts or with a complete stranger, you may want to use "vous" just in case, and some will even tell you if you can just drop the politeness with them (I sometimes do that irl)
