      @pounce "tu" is for anyone you're on casual terms with. Like someone you know, even as acquaintances. If you feel like you have to be polite with someone however, usually for more professional contexts or with a complete stranger, you may want to use "vous" just in case, and some will even tell you if you can just drop the politeness with them (I sometimes do that irl)

      @pounce yeah I see the issue. Usually, in situations like these, if one of the party uses "tu", it means they're okay with you using it back. It happens often enough in fact, but people usually just adjust to each other on the go.

      And as for this context, a classmate is someone on equal term to you, right? Close in terms of age and the fact you're in the same group (or here, class). You can take a casual approach. For a teacher? You might wanna show a bit of respect, as they're older and the one in charge, and use "vous" instead

      @solidsanek this makes sense

      i usually lean toward more polite which is the problem, like one of my classmates is french and we spoke a bit (but this was like, my first time talking to him) and i thought i should use 'vous' but he used 'tu' and that was awkward >_>
