A while ago you asked for my favourite German poet. I replied I had none because I wasn't much into poetry. But that is not true. The poet I most admire and who strangely slipped my mind back then is Helmut Salzinger.
Helmut Salzinger has been an influential music critique, poet, essayist in German literature of the 1970s to the 1990s or so. More or less the doyen of the German Beat writers and Ethno-Poets.
Here are two poems of his I translated a few years ago:
Gegen Abend
verschwanden
die Wolken die den
ganzen Tag
verdunkelt
hatten, so
klären sich die Dinge
Towards Evening
the clouds which
had darkened
the whole day
vanished; thus
things clear up
----------------------------
MOLLBERG (1)
Amsel steht
starr im Wald
starrt mich an
bewegungslos
oder nein, wie
ein Stück Holz
beruhigt hinterm Fenster
lehn ich mich zurück, da
flatterts hoch, kreischt
auf und davon
MOLLBERG (1)*
Blackbird stands
stiff in the woods
stares at me
motionless
or no, rather like
a piece of wood
mollified behind the window
I lean back, then
a flutter up, squawk
off and away
* a place in Germany, a few kilometres to the north of the city of Oldenburg
----------------------------
This third poem is one of my favourite, I tried a rather clumsy and brute translation today:
Letzter Versuch
wenn ichs jetzt nicht bald mache
wird es mir auch auf den letzten
Metern meines Lebens nicht
gelingen, vom Boden abzuheben
in die Luft und zu fliegen
Mitte Februar, heute
die erste Lerche
über den Wiesen, gehört
auch gesehen wie sie
singend aufgestiegen, wenn
auch nicht sehr hoch
allem Festen enthoben, in
einem Medium treibend, das
flüssiger als Wasser ist und
dessen Widersacher die Schwerkraft
allein der Erde
als wüchse eine Bewegung
in mir, die mich ergreift und
mit sich nimmt, wohin
auch immer.
Last attempt
should I not begin soon
then on the last
metres of my life I won't
succeed to rise from the ground
into the air and fly
Midst of February, today
I heard the first lark
above the meadows
saw her too how she
rised jubillantly though
not very high
relieved of all solid, floating
in a medium more liquid
than water, its
opponent only
Earth's gravity
as if a movement grew
inside me, captured and
took me with her
regadless where.
