Carrie Shanafelt@aral I had never heard this particular flavor of Islamophobia until I visited a Turkish friend in Iceland. Not a day went by without some Icelander lecturing me about the dangers of being seen in public with a Muslim. It would immediately become this "fundamental differences" talk that was supposed to make me afraid of discrimination by association. I couldn't help but realize how many places in Europe I'd felt welcome in because I was white and alone or with white-passing friends.
