obsidian is a proprietary free desktop and mobile application that saves everything in markdown w/ very simple extra json data. file based storage means it handles being synced via a file service very well (i use syncthing) https://obsidian.md/ it supports (back)links, markdown editing, a graph view, and a lot of plugins for handling extra things (automatic daily notes, tasks, git, etc) https://obsidian.md/
roam is a paid saas similar system, but it seems to have a more refined browsing UI, that i have not tried but i am interested in. there's a public demo instance that doesn't save https://roamresearch.com/#/app/help/page/80uPAx8m- also some people have supposedly cloned it into emacs but ive also not tried that https://www.orgroam.com/
