okay, i finally identified the connector. the outcome is about what you'd expect
- i measured the pitch incorrectly, it was 1.25mm and not 1.5mm
- chatgpt identified my image (5 pins, top mount, latched, 5 pin) plus 1.5mm pitch as 6-pin JST ZH (can't count but correct otherwise; doesn't match the drawing at all)
- i identified the connector because some guy obsessively catalogued all JST connectors
- with the correct pitch chatgpt identifies it as JST GH which is the right one
