Then the adult tells them they are going to leave the room for a while, and if they can not touch the marshmallow until they come back, the kid will get even more marshmallows. The kids that snatch up and eat the marshmallow when the adult leaves tended to have a less well off life as they grew into adulthood than the kid that resisted temptation. Things like lower lifetime earnings, higher likelihood to become addicted and end up in jail, broken marriages and illegitimate kids, shorter life span, etc.

India, Africa, and the rest of the 3rd world are entire ethnicities who fail the marshmallow test.
