but I've never heard of people say that mastodon is down, or that the fediverse is down. the phrases themselves don't even make much sense. that sure is a proxy measurement of how decentralized a network is.
when users are all connected to the same server, even if it is potentially decentralized, it is centralized, and the central server amasses too much power over the users and over the network. that is a real problem.
me, I've long preferred truly distributed networks, in which accounts are not tied to specific servers, but maintained by the network: Twister, ssb, Tox, GNU Jami
