🌈Magical ThinkingDevils advocate here, the kid isn't a flight risk, he's not a career criminal. There isn't any witnesses for him to intimidate or evidence to destroy. He might have actually been safer in prison, that kid is too recognizable to go out in public.
He should have stayed in jail, letting him out will make him less sympathetic to the jury.
