windows has decades and decades of backwards compatibility layers, so at the cost of a winsxs folder that's bloated to 35GB of every version of every library ever written, software that came on a CD in 2002 is probably gonna work out of the box today and there are a gorillion possible troubleshooting steps that can get stuff working
linux has neither, but it does have the "autism in distro form" people who enjoy their computer breaking all the time and doing things manually
