@lanodan oh yeah, agreed on all counts
tbh it also depends on what you mean by writing a pdf reader, whether it's writing a pdf renderer from scratch or using a library but actually putting a decent UI on it (with zathura, poppler seems a little better in my experience and pretty much all other UIs based on it fall short in one area or another; mupdf UIs are sadly even worse)
