Two aircraft were in the air, an F-16 and a Su-35
The Su-35 used an onboard system, probably LPI radar, to light up the F-16 and relayed the data to a SAM site on the ground.
And the SAM flew up, ignored the Su-36 and took out the F-16.

Traditionally, SAMs are set up in corridors and CAP flights have their own corridors and the two don't mix because SAMs really don't do IFF all that well.
