What he doesn't understand is that deep in people's hearts everyone hates taxes if they're the ones that have to pay them, including scumbag politicians that shill them, as our consciousness is fully aware that taxation is a form of theft. So what they do? They respond to arbitrary tariffs with more tariffs, and the debt doesn't budge.
