They were part of a gang and in some other gang's territory on holiday and their leader asked the local guys if it was ok to do robberies in the area. They were given the ok but somehow signals got crossed and it actually wasn't ok.

So they were killed for doing thefts on someone else's turf. The leader was found killed separately.

Basically gang shit. But calling them students makes better headlines.
