When witnessing a #generalstrike in other places, USians should not feel despair. It is much harder to organize here for a number of reasons.
One huge reason folks seem to forget is that the US is *not* one country. It is an empire. It is built atop many, many other pre-existing polities & ways of life. The "national level" is partly an illusion.
A federal government is there, like many of its institutions, to lend a false sense of unity. To move the goalposts. To make us feel defeated before we even begin.
Perhaps we need to keep in mind that a general strike need *not* be a national strike, here, in order to be effective (though detractors will tell us it must be, to try selling their own invincibility).
Perhaps what we need are fewer national strikes, to have more state & regional strikes--as well as more *international* ones.
