The safety of pork increases dramatically with factory farming, which is bitter sweet because it's not an ideal way to raise an animal. Being outside is basically a requirement for trichinella infections (trichinosis parasite) lifecycle completion, so cheap off the shelf pork is usually okay. You should always cook it to recommended temps though, because trichinella won't die from a freezer or even a 10% salt content like a bacon curing.
