The rest of us have family, friends, work, hobbies that take up our time and enrich our lives.
These people only have their activism, so they are prepared to spend their lives promoting their cause. They get into positions of power and influence and can push for whatever their agenda is, almost unopposed, because the rest of us are busy and don't understand the level and nature of what drives them. This is how, before the rest of us even notice it's a *thing* these people and their cronies are everywhere and have got their way on stuff we'd say no to.
