Typically attackers exploit thousands or tens of thousands of routers at a time and could and would simply ignore any that crashed.

There really isn't much difference between a consssuuummeer router and a "business router", as both run mostly the same software - typically BusyBox with an extremely old, proprietary version of Linux with some crappy scripts to generate the web interface.

I personally use a GNUbooted router that runs GNU/Linux-libre.
