Not only that but they collected entire packet dumps, not just ssids. Like how do you not notice that your system is collecting many more gigabytes of data than intended.
People's browsering history, emails and passwords was collected, and this was before a significant portion of web traffic was protected by https.
And then they tried to hide that they did it.
