1. It isn't "virtue signaling" to save the soul of someone condemned. Ultimately their eternal salvation is of far more consequence than their immediate survival. This is incomprehensible to the bugman, who can only see short-term reward and consequence.
2. Cartoon worship aside, the two situations are not comparable. The problem with modern ideas of "forgiveness" is that it entails a suspension of Earthly justice and allows the transgressions to continue. Saving someone and then carrying out their sentence is completely fine, it is ultimately not up to us to decide who is saved and we shouldn't deny anyone the chance to be. Plus I don't believe carrying out a ritual and saying words is automatic salvation, God will know their hearts when He judges them.
