on the battlefield joan of arc dressed like a man. there is some possible indication that she preferred dressing like a man. but the typical explanation is simply that it reduced her profile as a sexual target. when she was imprisoned she was forced to wear women's clothing. when she was almost raped, she began repeatedly requested men's clothing. it's possible she thought of herself as male, there's no evidence of it though other than the clothes I believe. I'm not completely opposed to the idea, there's always been a percentage. people that display sexual non-conformity are candidates. but non-conformity could mean a lot of different things.
