   on the battlefield joan of arc dressed like a man. there is some possible indication that she preferred dressing like a man. but the typical explanation is simply that it reduced her profile as a sexual target. when she was imprisoned she was forced to wear women's clothing. when she was almost raped, she began repeatedly requested men's clothing. it's possible she thought of herself as male, there's no evidence of it though other than the clothes I believe. I'm not completely opposed to the idea, there's always been a percentage. people that display sexual non-conformity are candidates. but non-conformity could mean a lot of different things.

     I don't know anything about historic queer identity, well just some stuff about non-conformity and, a bit about Islam. But I was very interested in Joan of Arc for a long time. I don't speak French and am never going to learn, which is too bad because most of the writing is in French, only a bit of it makes it into English. There are a surprising amount of primary sources.

     @Moon I know that the judgement against her at least in part was driven by the fact that she “dressed like a man” but I dunno; to me it always seemed like she dressed like a soldier because it’s what she was told to do in her visions, and there really wasn’t men’s and women’s cuts for soldier’s gear.

     @Moon At that point I’d think the practical benefits would be apparent. But beyond that, she was forced to wear a plain women’s linen, which would be remarkably undignified after leading an army; if the dignity you know is in uniform, then you’d want that uniform in your worst situations.

     @Moon people seeing a woman dress male in order to protect herself from being tortured/killed for being a woman, then deciding that even in death she cant be called a woman, just because they need something to tweet about, is one of those things that annoys me disproportionately considering it’s an idea no more than maybe 4 people have ever considered in earnest
