We know what "viruses" and bacterial infections have symptoms overlaps, and a lot of it is immune response. It would be fallacious to assume the immune system is the cause of both diseases despite it being the primary source of symptoms. There are dozens of viruses with different properties that share symptoms of rapid onset fever, headache, malaise, cough, sneeze, etc. SARS-COV-2 is a coronavirus, like the one that causes the most severe colds that, prior to COVID-19, were the number one cause of fatal pneumonia in the elderly. The same coronavirus that is today the severe common cold was likely the Russian Flu.
