With old-timey things like your carved organizer, I always wonder if the artisan did the work entirely freehand, or if they had a template or other guide, or if there was some kind of mechanical replication (like a pantograph).

Of course, with modern-day manufacturing I expect a piece of cheap wood to be carved in minutes under a CNC machine...
