I forget exactly where, but somewhere in Engels' "Anti-Durhing" (possibly Part 1: Philosophy: Morality and Law) he talks about how religion shouldn't be forcefully repressed because it could potentially lead to the failure of the revolution. The focus should primarily be on socialization of the means of production, creating social equality, and promoting scientific understanding, which will naturally lead to the decline of religion over time.
